Did you know … ? Since 2007, the Greater Bragg Creek Trail Association (GBCTA) has constructed over 110 km of new non-motorized trails and upgraded over 30 km of existing trails to create a signature area for the province – 165 km public trail system in Kananaskis Country and Rocky View County.
In West Bragg Creek (WBC) Kananaskis Country, the GBCTA has upgraded and expanded the original 43 km ski trail system to a 152 km multiuse trail system. The Government of Alberta approved WBC All Season Trail Plan, which the GBCTA formulated in 2009-10, is mostly implemented after 7 years of work which included raising and spending $1.1 million and volunteers contributing over 32,000 hours.
In 2017, WBC construction work focused on the Kestrel all season trail (5.5 km) from Merlin to Tom Snow. Kestrel is 100% cleared, 90% rough tread build and 50% finished tread built and is scheduled for completion in 2018. Trail work was also completed on the TransCanada trail from Range Road 54 to Boundary Ridge trail including the construction of 3 new bridges and 0.6 km of all season trail.
The GBCTA expects that, once Kestrel is completed in 2018, most of their efforts in the future will go towards trail repair, maintenance, grooming and upgrading in WBC.
The GBCTA is volunteer run with no staff and relies on hundreds of volunteers to do trail work and many many donations from financial supporters.
