For Bragg Creek Trails, Volunteer Safety Comes First

BCT has adopted a vigorous Health and Safety Environment Program that is in compliance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act. In doing so we have become a leader within the trail building community for developing safe work practices specific to trail work.

Volunteers are expected to follow the safe practices and procedures under the direction of our crew leaders. Personal protective equipment and training is provided as needed. A list of required personal equipment is provided prior to the work day. First aid and emergency communication equipment is deployed with every work crew.

All volunteers must sign a BCT Volunteer Agreement, have a profile on MyBetterImpact and log their hours to be covered under Bragg Creek Trails WCB coverage.

Volunteers are expected to participate in a pre-work safety meeting called tailgate meetings as well as subsequent onsite team sessions to discuss risk mitigation. Volunteers must acknowledge risks associated with the day’s work and sign the Field Hazard Assessment Form.

Volunteers have rights that pertain to establishing a safe work environment for themselves and others.

The Right to Know

All workers have the right to know what hazards may be present at a work site, how these hazards may affect them, and what will be done to control or mitigate the risks associated with hazards

The Right and Responsibility to Participate

All workers have the right to participate in health and safety management activities.

The Right and Responsibility to Refuse

All workers have the right to refuse work that they believe on reasonable grounds to be unsafe for themselves or others at the worksite.

The Right and Responsibility to Report

All workers have the right to report safety events (i.e. near miss, incident), unsafe practices, and unsafe conditions without fear of reprisal.
