While many are treating this mild winter with glee, the folks at the GBCTA are being challenged with changing conditions on a continual basis. The chinook winds have blown over 130 trees onto the trails to date. These have been dealt with efficiently by our small band of certified chainsaw wielding volunteers. Our new fleet of trail grooming motorcycles have been invaluable in getting to work sites quickly.
With the continuous freeze thaw cycles happening, we are experiencing more ice flows so please use extra caution when using the trails.
Our frustrated ski groomers are trying to make the best of every skiff of snow we get out here. “Rock skis” are a nice to have right now. The snowshoers have had to become winter hikers. Bringing along Yak Tracks or grips for your boots is a great idea.
Horseback use has also seen an increase with the mild weather which has added some challenges for us as we work to accommodate them in this multi-use trail system. This is a work in progress as we try to minimize winter trail damage and user conflicts.
