This webinar is a precursor to a restoration field day taking place in West Bragg Creek on Friday, October 8, 2021. Lunch and Learn Webinar: Learn more about how native plants like willows and poplars can be put to work to control erosion, filter runoff, and restore degraded streambank habitat. Find out more about how to harness the power of natural healing processes to improve the health of our watersheds.
The webinar will be led by Mike Gallant, a bioengineering specialist with KWL with a broad range of river restoration, fish habitat enhancement and bioengineering experience spanning almost two decades.
Webinar topics:
– Brief history and examples of bioengineering applications
– Harvesting, handling and storing live plant materials
-Simple bioengineering erosion control solutions for trail maintenance and streambank restoration applications (examples: live staking; live silt fences; willow brush layering; live pole drains; live fascines).

Mike Gallant is a water resources engineer who has been working on the planning, design, and construction of river engineering, water resources, and stormwater management projects since 2004. He has a wide range of specialist expertise including hydrology and hydraulics analysis and modelling, stormwater modelling and design, ground bioengineering, fisheries habitat design, and erosion and sediment control. Mike received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of New Brunswick where he specialized in the ecohydraulic design and construction of fish habitat enhancement structures.
