Now that we’re officially into spring it’s time to start thinking about activity changeover, even if the trails aren’t quite ready for it yet. While we are patiently waiting for the snow to melt and the trails to dry out, there are plenty of things to keep us busy while getting prepared for the upcoming season. Here’s a helpful checklist to ensure you’re ready as soon as the trails are.
For those that enjoy a hot meal after your adventure, fire up the camp stove and/or BBQ and ensure it is working properly. Clean grills and refill fuel bottles/tanks as needed.
Open your coolers and determine if there are any foul odours emanating from inside. It might be time to give the inside a good scrubbing before putting food/beverages back into it.
Check and/or replace the batteries in your headlamp/flashlight/bike lights. Nothing worse than needing a light and not having any battery life left.
Sharpen knives and/or multi-tool blades as needed.
Check expiration dates on items in your first aid kit and replenish as needed. Ensure items that were used are restocked for the upcoming season.
Check the expiration date on your bear spray canister. If expired, drop-off at any of the household hazardous waste stations for proper disposal.
Check the status of your bug spray, sunscreen, and hand sanitizer. Refill/replenish as needed.
Inspect hard goods (items such as hiking boots, trail runners, poles, backpacks etc.) for any damage. Repair if possible and replace as needed.
When was the last time your hydration bladder was cleaned? It’s likely long overdue for a thorough wash. You can buy special cleaning kits specifically for bladders. They’re a solid investment!
Re-waterproof your clothing (i.e. jackets, pants, boots etc.) using products such as Nikwax.
Ensure your favourite trail apps are up-to-date before heading out.
If you haven’t done so already, consider booking your bike in for an off-season tune-up. Many shops offer pre-season discounts/deals before the busy summer season gets underway.
