Background

Bragg Creek Trails (BCT) grooms and maintains 66 km of ski trails in West Bragg Creek (WBC) – a day use area in Kananaskis Country, a 45 min drive southwest of Calgary, Alberta and 10 km west of the charming hamlet of Bragg Creek. In recent years, WBC has seen an explosion in winter cross country skiers ranging from novice to elite level users.

BCT takes pride in providing a 4-season multi-user trail system (including skiing, fat-biking, snowshoeing, walking, and equestrian) with minimal user conflict, enthusiastic volunteering, and a respectful, supportive ambience for all.

Position Details

  • Seasonal full-time salaried position.
    • Duration: Nov 1, 2021 – March 31, 2022
    • Compensation: Salary Position Based on Experience ($30 -35/hr) on a 40 hr work week.
    • Scheduled work hours: will be variable with evening, night, and weekend shifts required depending on snowfall, grooming needs, and volunteer availability.
  • Reports to BCT’s VP Operations.
  • General duties include:
    • Provide oversight for all day-to-day ski grooming operations.
    • Follow the operating procedures and protocols of the BCT Safety Plan and Manual.
    • Coordination and scheduling of volunteers.
    • Attends regularly scheduled staff meetings including safety committee meetings.
  • Specific duties regarding machinery and equipment include:
    • Responsible for updating the VP OPs and maintenance personnel of any concerns regarding equipment including a monthly summary report of expenses and repairs.
    • Ensure accurate maintenance and servicing logs for all BCT rolling/track-setting equipment. This includes Snow Rabbit Cat, 2 Kei Trucks, Tracked Quad, Snowmobiles, Kubota tractor, Ginzu Groomers and Roller Packers.
    • Ensure adequate supply of fuel.
    • Train volunteer groomers on the usage of our small rolling/track-setting equipment and select volunteers on the safe and effective use of the Snow Rabbit.
    • Perform basic mechanical repairs, both in-field and in-shop, when BCT mechanical support is not available.
  • Specific duties regarding ski grooming include:
    • Direct and mentor less experienced grooming operators in the volunteer group.
    • Remove snags and buck trees that have come down on ski trails during shifts.
    • Meet the agreed upon grooming standards of BCT as directed by the VP Ops and lead ski grooming volunteers.
    • Post daily ski conditions reports on main kiosk, BCT website and on the Nordic Pulse app.
    • Responsible for setting Classic and Skate Ski Lanes, single track classic trails on small machines, regular skate lane renovation and assisting with Backcountry Ski Trails (Telephone Loop).
    • Collaborate with Fat bike trails Lead Groomer as needed.
    • Have the ability to work by yourself and maintain alertness throughout the night as grooming usually takes place between 7pm and 8 am.
    • Create a working calendar for all groomers that is mutually beneficial for effective grooming and sustainable volunteering.

Prerequisite skills

  • Snow cat operation on cross-country ski trails.
  • Snowmobile and ATV(Quad) experience with certification.
  • Current VHF Aeronautical Radio Operators license.
  • Standard First Aid with AED.
  • Chainsaw Operators certification (Level 1 minimum).
  • Experienced XC skier with understanding of the intricacies of grooming is a highly desirable.
  • Strong leadership, teambuilding and conflict resolution skills a plus.
